TIMELINE THERAPY TM TECHNIQUES
TimeLine Therapy TM is an especially fast and effective means for producing changes that relate to memory, including changing an individual’s personal history, and is especially fast and effective in changing the chain of events (called gestalts) that created a certain set of unwanted behaviours or internal states. Developed by Drs Tad James and Wyatt Woodsmall, and outlined in their book Time Line therapy and the basis of personality , TimeLine TM techniques are powerful and dramatic tools for affecting change at the deepest levels by shifting the perspective on a memory as it relates to time. This can completely change the effect of a person’s past within minutes. Unpleasant emotions such as sadness, guilt, fear, anger and anxiety are often neutralised quickly and easily. Our personal history is often reframed at the same time and this can comprehensively change the effect of a person’s past.
Time Line therapy TM techniques are most probably the single largest contribution to therapy in the last twenty-five years. They deal with the past, the present and the future. This is the most comprehensive paradigm to date because it accounts for change in all three areas. Additionally, TimeLine Therapy TM techniques’ orientation is on the highest quality transformation rather than simply remedial change.
PRESUPPOSITIONS OF TIMELINE THERAPY TM
The subconscious mind stores and organises memories in gestalts. The subconscious mind represses memories (significant emotional experiences) with unpleasant and unresolved emotions like fear, anxiety, guilt, sadness.
The function of the unpleasant emotion in the memory is to signal the need to learn by means of this experience. There is a first event in the gestalts of memories with the same emotion. The unpleasant emotions disappear when we change the temporal (time) reference.
SO WHAT IS A TIME-LINE?
All our experiences and emotions are stored on a timeline. The Time Line is how our unconscious mind encodes and stores our memories and allows us to tell the difference between one memory and another. Using TimeLine Therapy TM techniques we are able to trace back a particular present-time feeling, belief or decision to the first time in a memory – the root issue. Holding onto unpleasant emotions does not protect the body. In fact unpleasant emotions contribute to health problems. So the advantage of finding the root cause is that it can be resolved at that point in time (by removing the emotion from the memory or by deleting the limiting decision) and most often the solution is permanent.
UNPLEASANT EMOTIONS ARE UNHEALTHY FOR THE BODY
Unpleasant emotions feel terrible in the body. People use compensational behaviours like smoking, drinking, sex, over-eating and other obsessive-compulsive addictions in order to feel something else … anything else! Unpleasant emotions not only cause functional blockages in the nervous system, they also block the flow of success, and keep us from achieving our goals, by having us act in ways we don’t want. When emotions around traumas are repressed, we often make an unconscious decision to limit our view. Yet, when these emotions from the past are truly released, it is as if the anchors from the past that have been holding us back let go, and we feel free. Often when unpleasant emotions and decisions are released, there is a subsequent chain-reaction along the Time Line, frequently releasing other emotions and decisions connected to the originating event. This not only clears the past, but the future is also re-arranged and re-evaluated in the light of the release of the limiting decision. This puts the client back in control.
